Independent data: high volume, efficient recovery and excellent patient experience
National Joint Registry (NJR) data records 171 primary hip replacements under Mr Symes’ care in 2025–26, more than 2½ times the national consultant average. Over the latest three-year period, 479 primary hip replacements were recorded, placing his practice amongst the highest-volume hip replacement practices in Yorkshire.

at the highest level
Independent-sector results are also published by PHIN (the Private Healthcare Information Network). PHIN is an independent organisation that collects and publishes information on private healthcare activity, hospital stay, outcomes and patient experience.
In the latest PHIN data, Mr Symes had an adjusted average hospital stay of 1.6 days following primary hip replacement, shorter than most comparable surgeons. 97% of patients rated their overall experience at the highest level, while 98.5% said they were likely or extremely likely to recommend him.
Taken together, the NJR and PHIN data demonstrate a combination of high surgical volume, efficient recovery and excellent patient experience.
Results you can trust
Choosing a surgeon is about more than having a successful operation. It’s about relieving pain, restoring mobility and helping you return to the activities you enjoy.
I routinely measure every patient’s recovery using Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) – these are nationally recognised questionnaires completed before and after surgery. These provide an unbiased measure of improvements in pain, function and quality of life and allow me to continually monitor and improve the care I provide.

Detailed Results
Hip Replacement
The graphs below show how my patients’ pain, function and quality of life improve following hip replacement surgery, with excellent outcomes maintained throughout long-term follow-up.

Knee Replacement
Patients also report substantial improvements following knee replacement surgery. As with all long-term follow-up studies, fewer patients complete questionnaires at later time points, so five-year results should be interpreted in that context.

Why I measure PROMS
Collecting patient-reported outcomes allows me to monitor my results, compare them with national standards and continually improve the care I provide.
I believe patients should have access to objective information as well as patient reviews when choosing their surgeon.
